The Procedure

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

Follicular unit excision (FUE) is a minimally invasive method of donor harvesting. In FUE the follicular units are removed individually using an instrument that makes small circular incisions that heal by themselves. Hundreds, even thousands of these incisions are made depending on how many grafts are necessary to fill the area of hair loss.

The advantages of this method are a faster recovery because there are no sutures, no linear scars and less post-operative pain.

The disadvantages of FUE are that the procedure is much more time consuming, requires preoperative shaving of the donor area and that the results are often less consistent than with FUT. However, Dr. Cohen now exclusively utilizes the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration System, which significantly reduces the operative time while producing consistently high quality follicular unit grafts and superior results.
